The Reims-Cessna F406 Caravan II is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft that is manufactured on the basis of various other Cessna types by the French manufacturer Reims Aviation SA (now a subsidiary of GECI Aviation ).
development and construction
The F406 is a twin-engine low - wing aircraft for up to 12 passengers with a retractable nose wheel. The machine is made entirely of metal, but does not have a pressurized cabin . The system components come from the Cessna 425 , the fuselage from the Cessna 404 and the wings from the Cessna 441 . The first flight of the machine (registration number F-WLZT) took place on September 22, 1983.
There are two versions: the VIGILANT, for surveillance and other military tasks, and the COMMUTER version for passenger and freight transport. The type has approval according to FAR23 and SFAR41. Operation according to IFR and VFR is also permitted if there is a risk of icing.
The main buyers of the machine, which was delivered from 1984, were small charter airlines such as Tulip-Air or Atlantic Express . The only German commercial operator is Air-taxi europe with three aircraft of this type (S / N 007, S / N 050 and S / N 061).
In addition, the type is used by the French customs authorities and the army. In the UK, two aircraft of the type are used by the Coast Guard in the detection and control of marine pollution.
94 machines had been manufactured by May 2008.

Incidents
- On November 3, 2001, a GJ Air (ZS-OIG) Reims-Cessna F406 , which was to be used for a flight to Eros Airport in Namibia , crashed shortly after taking off from Johannesburg Airport . All three people on board were killed. The accident investigation revealed a loss of control along the roll and pitch axis, caused by a 16 percent overload and incorrect weight distribution. Other significant operational violations were identified: the airworthiness and operating certificates had expired, the operational limits of the engines were exceeded, the load was unsecured and a passenger was transported even though there was neither a seat nor a restraint device on board (see also a Reims-Cessna flight accident F406 at Johannesburg Airport ) .
- On 17 August 2003, a Reims-Cessna F406 was Hageland Aviation Services (N6591L) on a cargo flight from the airport Barrow to airport Wainwright in Alaska in the Chukchi Sea flown. The two people on board the machine were killed. The evaluation of the radar data and statements by a local pilot suggested that the machine was flown into the sea after the occupants had misused the flight for whale watching (see also flight accident of a Reims-Cessna F406 of Hageland Aviation Services ) .
