The Cessna 401 and Cessna 402 are largely identical twin-engine propeller aircraft from the American manufacturer Cessna with 6 to 10 seats. They are driven by two piston engines. While the 401, which was built until mid-1972, was used as a business jet, the 402, which was manufactured until 1985, was initially offered for shuttle and freight transport until the two model series were combined at the end of 1971. Both do not have a pressurized cabin .
history
The Cessna 401 is a lighter and less motorized variant of the Cessna 411 , which could be offered correspondingly more cheaply. Reduction gears have been dispensed with in the motors, and maintenance costs have also been reduced. The first flight of the prototype of the Cessna 401/402 took place on August 26, 1965 , the FAA approval followed on September 20, 1966. On November 1, 1966, the two series were presented to the public. As with its predecessor, the Cessna 401 was equipped with six seats. Four small oval windows are built into each side. In 1968 the improved Cessna 401A was introduced, followed by the Cessna 401B the following year. At the same time, the Cessna 402 was offered as a small passenger plane.
On December 8, 1971, the Cessna 401 was replaced by the Cessna 402 Businessliner . The former Cessna 402 as a maximum nine- seat basic version with the nickname Utiliner was still offered as a passenger or cargo aircraft.
The 402A was given a longer nose, five angular windows on both sides and a tenth seat on request. The 402C, available from 1979 (FAA approval on September 25, 1978) received the supporting structure of the Cessna 414 A with a wet wing, with the up to then used tip tanks and more powerful engines.
Production ended in 1985 after the delivery of 401 Cessna 401s and 1,535 Cessna 402s.
Version (Cessna 401/402, 1971)
The Cessna 401/402 is a twin-engine, low -wing aircraft . The engine nacelles are attached to the cantilevered wing, into which the main landing gear legs move. The nose wheel landing gear is electrically operated and has hydraulically operated disc brakes . The cantilever all-metal wing with two spars has a V-position of 5 ° and an angle of incidence of 2 ° at the root and −0 ° 30 'at the wing tip. The ailerons are also made entirely of metal. There is a trim surface in the left aileron. The slotted landing flaps are operated electrically. As with the tail unit, a pneumatically operated de-icing system can optionally be attached. The tail unit is self-supporting, with a sweep of the vertical tail unit of 40 ° at 25% depth. Both the rudder and the right elevator have a trim surface. The fuselage is also made entirely of metal in a semi-self-supporting construction.
Two turbocharged six-cylinder boxer engines from Continental are used as the drive , which drive three-bladed propellers. In the basic version, the fuel is only carried in two wing end tanks with a capacity of 193 liters each. In addition, two tanks each can be installed in the wings and two in the fuselage, which increases the total capacity to 696 liters. The on-board network of 28 volts has a 24 Ah battery and two generators that are mechanically driven by the motors and have a capacity of 50 amperes.
The two pilots sit next to each other in the cabin of the Cessna 401/402. Cessna supplied nine different standard cabin layouts for five or six passengers. Each passenger has their own oxygen mask and reading lamp. The entrance door is on the left. The cockpit can be separated from the passenger compartment by a wall with a door. The area behind the passenger cabin can be partitioned off in order to equip it with a toilet, cloakroom, minibar and luggage room. There is an emergency exit on the right side of the cell. The cabin windows are double-glazed to reduce the noise level. In addition to the space in the cabin, luggage can also be transported in the bow and in two compartments in the rear of the engine nacelles.
