The Cessna 162 Skycatcher is a light aircraft from the American manufacturer Cessna , which was built from 2009 to 2013.

history

The smallest aircraft made by Cessna was the two-seater C-140 , which later became known worldwide with only minor changes under the model numbers C-150 and C-152. Over 30,000 aircraft of this model series were produced in all variants. Because of its low operating costs and good-natured flight characteristics, the aircraft is still one of the standard models for pilot training today. Over 75% of the old model series are still in use. In 1985 Cessna decided to stop producing light aircraft for reasons of American product liability law.

The manufacturer's other model series were produced again from 1996, but it was another ten years before Cessna presented a successor to the C-152 at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in July 2006, which was initially called the Cessna LSA . While the engine was adopted from the tried and tested predecessor model, the interior is significantly wider, and the two-seater C-162 has a modern Garmin -G300 glass cockpit , which has been specially adapted for this small model.

The aircraft is approved for day and night flights according to visual flight rules (VFR), but not for flights according to instrument flight rules (IFR). The first SkyCatcher series had its maiden flight in May 2008 (around eight weeks after the prototype). The first machine built in Shenyang in the People's Republic of China by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation for the American market had its maiden flight on September 17, 2009. The approximately 400 kg heavy metal two-seater was registered in the USA in the LSA class and was initially sold for $ 111,500; by 2011, however, the price had risen to $ 149,000.

The machine is equipped with a 74 kW Continental piston engine and has a top speed of 219 km / h and a range of 870 km. In the summer of 2011, the 100th machine was delivered and Cessna announced that it wanted to modernize the machine. Among other things, the aluminum propeller was replaced by a model made of composite materials from McCauley .

In Europe, the Cessna did not receive a type certification from EASA . The price, which has meanwhile increased to $ 149,000, also turned out to be no longer competitive.

In January 2014, Cessna announced the end of sales. By then 192 copies had been sold. The remaining 80 unsold machines are to be dismantled as spare parts donors.

At the end of 2016, the remaining Skycatchers stored at Cessna since 2014 were scrapped. It is said to have been around 67, according to another source around 80 copies. Only one machine is permitted in Europe (as of 2015), namely the German D-EUSD , serial number 043.
