From 1948, Cessna expanded the existing model series with the Cessna 170 . With four seats, it was an enlarged version of the Cessna 140 light aircraft . Like this, the Cessna 170 was a shoulder-wing aircraft with braced wings and a rigid tail wheel landing gear. Almost 5,200 of the 170, 170A, 170B and 170C series were built between 1948 and 1956.
1) There are two different indications for the date of the first flight: November 5, 1947 or June 1, 1948.
Versions
The first examples of the Cessna 170 from serial number 18003 were delivered from February 1948. They had fabric-covered wings, double V-shaped wing struts and three tanks in order to achieve the desired range with the more powerful Continental C-145-2 engine .
At the end of 1948, Cessna began producing the 170A model , which was made entirely of metal. The original price was $ 5,995. The aircraft had metal wings with simple wing support and slightly larger flaps that could be extended from zero to 50 degrees.
The most popular version, the Cessna 170B (2907 units), was introduced in 1952 and produced with several changes until 1956. The most obvious change from the 170 / 170A models are the large, effective half-Fowler keys similar to those of the L-19 . The flaps originally had four levels: 0, 20, 30 and 40 degrees. From 1952 the wings were angled 3 degrees and stretched more between the strut and the wing tip. The shape of the vertical stabilizer has been changed and the elevator trim has been improved.
As an experimental aircraft, Cessna built a copy of the 170C with a vertical vertical stabilizer and a Continental O-300 engine with 155 hp. The Cessna 172 was developed from this .
