history
construction
The contract to build the Charlotte, was on February 6, 1987 at the Newport News Shipbuilding awarded where it on August 17, 1990 Kiel was laid. The launch took place on October 3, 1992, the ship was christened by Mrs. Mary McCormack after the city of Charlotte in North Carolina . The commissioning with the US Navy finally took place on September 16, 1994. The first in command of the ship was Commander Michael Matthews.
Calls
The first mission led the Charlotte in 1997 for the naval intelligence service in the western Pacific, later also with the carrier combat group around the USS Independence (CV-62) together in the Persian Gulf. From June 2004, the submarine was part of a combat group around the USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3)
In late 2005, the Charlotte left for an overhaul period at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard . The way there led the submarine under the Arctic ice cap, where it emerged through 155 cm thick ice. The ship could only break through ice of this thickness, as it belongs to the third construction lot of the class, whose depth rudders, in contrast to the earlier boats, were relocated to the hull and are no longer on the tower . In contrast to earlier boats, this was reinforced for the same purpose. At the end of October 2007, the Charlotte returned to her home port of Pearl Harbor , Hawaii .
At the end of 2010 the submarine was moved to the western Pacific.
