The USS Baltimore (SSN-704) was a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and belonged to the Los Angeles-class submarine to. It was named after the city of Baltimore , Maryland .
history
SSN-704 was commissioned in 1973 and laid down at the Electric Boat shipyard in May 1979. After the launch at the end of 1980, the final equipment and shipyard test drives followed. Godmother was Congresswoman Marjorie Holt from Maryland. The official commissioning took place in mid-1982.
After 16 years of service, the nuclear fuel in the boat's reactor should have been replaced. However, since the Baltimore belonged to the first construction lot of its class and, unlike newer boats, had no vertical launching system , the money for the overhaul and the annual operating costs were saved and the boat was decommissioned. The submarine is currently being scrapped, which has been taking place in the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard since 2013 .
