USS Columbia (SSN-771) is a Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine ( SSN ) and the eighth ship in the United States Navy named Columbia. SSN-771 got its name in honor of the cities of Columbia , South Carolina , Missouri, and Illinois .

history

The construction contract went to the Electric Boat shipyard , a General Dynamics company . It is the 33rd and last Los Angeles submarine manufactured by Electric Boat, the keel-laying of which took place on April 21, 1993. The ship was christened by Hillary Clinton and put into service on October 9, 1995.
