The USS Providence (SSN-719) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to.
history
The Providence was commissioned from Electric Boat in 1979 and laid down there in 1982. The launch took place in 1984, with the US Navy the ship was put into service in 1985.
The Providence is the first ship in flight II in the Los Angeles class , which means that it is the first boat with an integrated vertical launching system .
After operations in the Mediterranean and the western Pacific, the boat also drove in the Persian Gulf. The Providence took part in the operations Southern Watch , Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom in part, where they also BGM 109 Tomahawk shot down -Marschflugkörper on targets in Iraq. For these missions she received the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and several other awards.
In July 2008, Providence appeared at the North Pole to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first North Pole crossing by the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) . The Providence was on its way to the Pacific from its home port in Groton. In early 2011, the submarine moved alongside the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) into European waters and further into the Indian Ocean, where the group was used to keep the sea lanes clear. After the unrest in Libya , the Providence was withdrawn from the Enterprise combat group in March 2011 with the USS Mason (DDG-87) and sent back to the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. On March 19, the submarine fired UGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Libyan targets as part of Operation Odyssey Dawn , and returned to the USA a short time later.
In fiction
The Providence plays an important role in the attempt to repel the advancing Soviet forces in Tom Clancy's book The Storm . She took part in an operation aimed at bombing airfields on the Kola Peninsula with cruise missiles, but was badly damaged by a Soviet frigate and later sunk by submarines while trying to escape.
