The USS Olympia (SSN-717) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to.
history
The Olympia was commissioned from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1977 and keeled at the company's shipyard in Newport News , Virginia in 1981 . The launch and christening of the ship took place in 1983, and the namesake is the city of Olympia in Washington . The submarine entered service with the United States Navy in late 1984 and was commanded by Commander James Horten.
The Olympia was involved in Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001/2002 and left the port shortly after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . In 2004 the Olympics took part in the RIMPAC exercise , and in 2005 the boat moved to the Western Pacific to sail as part of the combat group of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) .
