Lists of United States Navy Ship Classes by Type |
This list includes all known military submarine classes in the United States Navy . A boat class actually comprises several ships of the same design. Due to the advancing technical development, various changes were introduced in later units of a large class, whereby the latter submarines could be more powerful than their type ship . However, if there were major changes compared to the original draft, a so-called subclass was occasionally introduced. Occasionally, a submarine class consisted of a single ship, often being the prototype, mainly used for experimental and testing purposes.

Classification codes
The US Navy classification standards provide information about the propulsion and purpose of a submarine. In general, the abbreviation SS stands for "Ship, submersible" (German: "Schiff, diving capable"). Depending on the drive and intended use of a military submarine, letter identifiers are added:
- N for "nuclear" , ie nuclear powered (→ Ship Submersible Nuclear ).
- G for "guided missiles" , i.e. the offensive primary armament with guided missiles such as B. cruise missiles or anti-ship missiles, mostly tactical deployable (→ Ship Submersible Guided Missile Nuclear ).
- B for "ballistic" , ie arming with ballistic ICBMs for strategic use (→ Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear ).
- K for "killer" , the special design for submarine hunting.
