The USS Plunger SS-2 was one of the first submarines in the United States Navy . It was the first plunger class submarine . The submarine is also known by its class name A-1 .
history
The plunger was laid down on May 21, 1901 in Elizabethport , New Jersey, at the Crescent Shipyard . The boat was launched on February 1, 1902 and put into service on September 19, 1903. For two years the plunger was assigned to the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, Rhode Island for extensive torpedo and engine tests. The training of officers and sailors was also promoted during this time. The experiments were only interrupted by an overhaul from March to November 1904 in the Holland shipyard. In August 1905, after two weeks of maintenance work, she was brought to New York on August 22nd with the tug USS Apache . There she was prepared, lying next to the tug, for the visit of President Theodore Roosevelt .
The following morning the plunger batteries were charged and five dives were made. Later that afternoon, President Roosevelt boarded the plunger for two hours , which again made several dives. After berthing next to the tug, Roosevelt stayed on board for another hour.
From the beginning of 1909 to February 1910, the future Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz served on the plunger . It was his first mission on a submarine.
