construction
The Virginia was laid down at Electric Boat in Groton , Connecticut in 1999 , and was launched in August 2003. The boat was christened by Lynda Johnson Robb, wife of a former Virginia governor and daughter of Lyndon B. Johnson . On October 23, 2004 the Virginia was put into service, its first in command was David J. Kern. The boat is the first without a conventional periscope . A camera system with all-round visibility is used as a replacement.
Calls
On November 23, 2005, the Virginia ended its first mission. On January 12, 2006, she was taken to the Electric Boat shipyard, where she went through a post-shakedown-availability phase for most of 2006 . The first mission trip is generally evaluated and, if necessary, minor repairs are carried out. Several other smaller relocations followed by 2009. It was not until October 2009 that the Virginia began the first regular six-month mission to the Mediterranean. On September 1, 2010, the submarine docked in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for the first overhaul.
