The USS Hawaii (SSN-776) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy . She is the third unit in the Virginia class .
history
The Hawaii was commissioned on September 30, 1998 along with her two predecessors and a successor. The order for the Hawaii was placed with Electric Boat , part of the General Dynamics group. The keel of the submarine was laid on August 27, 2004 at EB's Groton , Connecticut shipyard . On June 17, 2006, the boat was christened after the state of Hawaii , godmother was the governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle . The commissioning of the boat took place on May 5th in Groton. Hawaii's home port was New London , Connecticut.
The first laying of the boat began at the end of 2007 and lasted until May 2008. The submarine has been used to monitor drug smugglers over the past few months. Several boats carrying drugs were discovered and picked up by surface ships. For this, the crew was awarded the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation . 2009 was Hawaii in Pearl Harbor stationed in Hawaii. In August 2010 the submarine moved to the Pacific. Among other things, it took part in the exercise Valient Shield and training drives with the carrier combat group around the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) .
