The USS South Dakota (SSN-790) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy . It belongs to the Virginia class and was named after the US state of South Dakota .
Surname
On July 15, 2008, it was announced that SSN-790 would be named after the US state of South Dakota. She is the third active ship in the US Navy to receive this name. The first was the Pennsylvania-class cruiser USS South Dakota . The second ship to bear this name was the USS South Dakota , a South Dakota second - class battleship that was in service from 1942 to 1947. A fourth South Dakota , lead ship of the first South Dakota class , was not completed.
history
The order went to Electric Boat in Groton on December 22, 2008 . Construction for the boat began in 2013, the keel was laid in April 2016 and the ship was christened on October 14, 2017 . The boat entered service in its home port in early 2019.
