List of Virginia-class submarines
The Virginia- class submarine list includes all Virginia- class units of the United States Navy . This class is nuclear powered hunting submarines (SSN). With 13 submarines put into service (Nov. 2016) and further orders, it is expected to form the backbone of the US hunting submarine fleet by the middle of the 21st century .
Predecessors to the Virginia class are the Los Angeles class and the Seawolf class .
construction
Flight I The first four boats (SSN-774 to SSN-777) were ordered in September 1998. A year later became the USS Virginia on down Kiel . It entered service five years later.
Flight II (SSN-778 to SSN-783) On this flight the construction was mainly organized differently (four fuselage sections instead of ten), which saves costs and shortens the construction time. The construction time of the New Hampshire (SSN-778) was a quarter shorter than that of the Virginia (SSN-774)
Flight III (SSN-784 through SSN-791) These improvements include: B. the removal of the twelve vertical launch tubes by two revolver magazines with six launch tubes each. These magazines are a modified version of the devices used on Ohio-class boats that have been converted to SSGN . This measure is intended to reduce the acquisition and maintenance costs. The first submarine of this flight was laid down in May 2012. A new sonar system will also be installed from this flight.
Flight IV (SSN-792 to SSN-801) Here, the number of necessary shipyard visits is reduced from four to three during the service life.
Flight V (SSN-802 to SSN-805) The Virginia Payload Module is expected to be used in this construction lot, which will improve the capability for land attacks.
The Virginia- class submarines are built at two different shipyards: Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding each manufacture components for the submarines, which are alternately assembled at the two shipyards.
Name of the shipyard | number |
---|---|
Electric Boat | 16 |
Newport News Shipbuilding | 12 |
From SSN-778 all units were delivered early.
Eight submarines are currently under construction, and another seven units have been approved. The Navy wants to order at least 30 ships of this class.
Stationings
13 submarines are stationed in three different ports . An overview is shown in the following table:
