The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is a ship's throw of the United States Navy in Pearl Harbor on Hawaii .

history

The shipyard was built in 1908, for which Congress approved $ 3 million.

During the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the shipyard was also hit. In the first wave of attacks, only a few torpedoes were dropped on the ships lying on the wharfs of the shipyard, which hit the cruiser USS Helena (CL-50) and the minesweeper USS Oglala (CM-4) , which were lying along the 1010 dock. The Oglala then capsized and the Helena suffered only minor damage. The shipyard was hit harder in the second wave. One target of the attack was the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) , which was in dry dock with the destroyers USS Cassin (DD-372) and USS Downes (DD-375) . Both the dock and the two destroyers were badly damaged, while the Pennsylvania received only one bomb hit. The remaining shipyard facilities remained largely undamaged, so that ships could be repaired again shortly after the attack. The USS Yorktown (CV-5) arrived in 1942 and was made operational again in just a few days.

Today the shipyard occupies around 1.2 km² of land on the south coast of Oahu , five miles west of Honolulu .
