The USS California (SSN-781) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy . It belongs to the Virginia class and was named after the US state California .
history
SSN-781 was commissioned in 2003 and laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding in May 2009 . The submarine was christened on November 6, 2010, godmother was Donna Willard, the wife of Admiral Robert F. Willard . A week later, the construction dock was flooded and the California was launched. In August 2011, the US Navy took over the submarine eight months ahead of the contractually guaranteed date. On October 29, 2011, the California was put into service in Norfolk. She was then stationed in the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton .
