The USS Texas (SSN-775) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the Virginia class .
history
The contract to build the Texas went to Newport News Shipbuilding in 1998 . The keel was laid in 2002 at the company's shipyard, which is owned by Northrop Grumman , at their shipyard in Newport News , Virginia . The boat was designed by First Lady Laura Bush in the name of Texas named after the US state of Texas . The address at the July 31, 2004 ceremony was given by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison from Texas .
In 2005 the boat was launched and began its first test drives, called Initial or Alpha Sea Trials . The Texas finished this successfully in May 2006, which was followed by a layover time in which the last mistakes were eliminated. On September 9, 2006, the boat officially entered service with the United States Navy . It has been stationed in Pearl Harbor , Hawaii since 2009 . In October 2009, the Texas appeared near the North Pole. This made her the first boat in her class to operate in arctic waters. The first regular mission led the submarine from May to August 2010 in the eastern Pacific, where it operated under the command of the Joint Interagency Task Force South . In June 2011, the submarine was relocated to the western Pacific; on the way it visited ports in Japan and South Korea, among others.
