The phrase "Do not Mess With Texas" (Engl. "Do not hang yourself with Texas" ) is a protected as a trademark slogan of the Texas Department of Transportation , the Department of Transportation of the State of Texas .

The slogan has been used since the beginning of an advertising campaign aimed at reducing litter on the state's streets in 1986 and found its way into US parlance and popular culture.

"Don't Mess with Texas" was widely used on TV, radio and street signs. The slogan is a play on words with the ambiguity of the word to mess , which means “littering” but also “messing with”, and was originally intended to target 18- to 24-year-old men who are the main cause of pollution of the Highways were viewed. The over 70% decrease in pollution between 1986 and 1990 is attributed to the slogan. The term found its way into popular culture and is often quoted by Texans to express their pride and attachment to their state . The slogan is also marketed on various souvenir items and is the official motto of the nuclear submarine USS Texas .

"Don't Mess with Texas" is considered one of the best and most successful advertising slogans in the United States and was inducted into the American Advertising Federation Hall of Fame .

History of origin

The slogan was developed by the Austin, Texas- based advertising agency GSD & M Idea City , and the first television commercial aired with musician Stevie Ray Vaughan took place on January 1, 1986 during the Cotton Bowl Classics college football tournament . Since then, many prominent Texans have made themselves available for the recording of television or radio clips, including: a. Chuck Norris , Owen Wilson , George Foreman , Lance Armstrong or Jennifer Love Hewitt .
