The USS New Hampshire (SSN-778) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy . It belongs to the Virginia class and was named after the US state of New Hampshire .

history

SSN-778 was approved as the fifth boat in its class in 2003, and the keel was laid in 2007. The shipyard was Electric Boat , which was also launched on February 21, 2008. The godmother of the submarine's christening on June 21, 2008 was Cheryl McGuinness, the widow of Tom McGuinness, who was the copilot on American Airlines Flight 11 when it was captured for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks . Thanks to improved construction techniques, it only took around 18 months for a boat of this class to go from keel laying to commissioning on the New Hampshire for the first time. This completed the boat eight months ahead of original planning, saving $ 54 million.

The commissioning took place on October 25, 2008 in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard . In May 2009, the New Hampshire took part in exercise Joint Warrior in the North Atlantic. Subsequently, the submarine took part in celebrations of the Norwegian Navy in Haakonsvern . In March 2011, the New Hampshire began a warfare exercise in Arctic waters together with the USS Connecticut (SSN-22) , ICEX . During the journey, the oxygen processor had to be taken out of service on March 19 and switched to oxygen candles . The Navy spoke of an insignificant defect that did not pose a threat to the crew.
