Haakonsvern is the largest base of the Norwegian Naval Forces , consisting of the Norwegian Navy and the Norwegian Coast Guard . The base was opened in 1962.

location

The base is in Vestland, about eight kilometers west of Bergen . A total of 3,500 soldiers and civilians, including around 1,250 conscripts , are employed there.

It has its own fire station, hospital, swimming pool and sports hall, post office, church, doctor and dentist, depot and workshops. In Norway Haakonsvern is referred to as "eit samfunn i miniatyr" , in German  a society in miniature . Haakonsvern and Ramsund are the last two naval bases.

The regional logistics command for Western Norway as well as the workshop for ships of the navy and equipment are housed in the base.

220 apartments are available to members of the base for the short or long term.

expansion

In April 2006 the first of several new frigates ( Fridtjof Nansen class ) of the Norwegian Navy ran into Haakonsvern. Due to the acquisition of these frigates, for example, the dry dock had to be expanded considerably.

There is also a helicopter landing pad for the helicopter detachment from Bardufoss , which is due to be completed in 2016.
