The Norwegian Naval Forces ( Norwegian Sjøforsvaret ) consist of the Navy and Coast Guard units as well as the schools of Sjøforsvaret and the bases of Sjøforsvaret .

The Navy is the operational department of Sjøforsvaret and has the task of securing the military defense of the Norwegian marine areas if necessary. This includes maintaining Norwegian freedom of action against military and other threats and ensuring free access to the seas and ports of Norway.

In peacetime, the Coast Guard is the executive body of the state at sea. Its main tasks are the surveillance of the marine areas, the protection of Norwegian sovereignty and the exercise of Norwegian authority in some defined areas such as fisheries control.

The schools of Sjøforsvaret offer comprehensive maritime training in addition to training for recruits and officers, as well as leadership courses through the Naval War School ( Sjøkrigsskolen in Norwegian ).
