history
The Dallas was laid down at Electric Boat in October 1976 , launched on April 28, 1979, she was baptized by Mrs. William P. Clements, Jr. in the name of the Texas city of Dallas . The commissioning with the US Navy took place on July 18, 1981.
On August 27, 1981, the Dallas ran aground when entering the Atlantic Underwater Test and Evaluation Center on Andros Island , Bahamas and damaged the rudder. The ship was able to free itself and returned to New London on the surface , where the damage could be repaired. In 1988 the ship was overhauled as part of a Depot Modernization Period in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard , later the Dallas was equipped with a Dry Deck Shelter . In this pressure chamber attached behind the tower , divers can easily exit and re-enter the submarine in a submerged state, which enables the Dallas to carry out covert operations .
In 2000, the Dallas and the Mystic , a rescue submarine, contributed to exercises off the Turkish coast. In 2008 the Dallas was relocated to the Indian Ocean for six months.
Awards
The Dallas received two Meritorious Unit Commendations , two Navy Unit Commendations and the Battle E for Efficiency in 1986, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1999 and 2000 for its achievements .
Dallas in film and book
Dallas plays an important role in Tom Clancy's novel The Hunt for Red October . In the same film , it occurs as well, but the shooting with were USS Houston (SSN-713) performed. The USS Dallas also appears in a level of the game Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 in the level "The only easy day, was yesterday". She sends a combat diving team led by Cpt. McTavish to take a Russian-occupied oil rig. In the first episode of Stargate's fourth season - SG-1 Command , the USS Dallas wrecks a Russian Foxtrot-class submarine that has been taken over by alien replicators.
