The USS Pittsburgh (SSN-720) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to. It is named after the city of Pittsburgh .
history
The Pittsburgh was commissioned by Electric Boat in 1979 and laid down four years later. After a construction period of 19 months, the boat was launched in late 1984. On November 23, 1985 it was officially put into service with the United States Navy .
The Pittsburgh was used during the Second Gulf War to fire UGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles at targets in Iraq. The submarine also shot down cruise missiles against Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003.
In 2008, Pittsburgh took part in the Fleet Week Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale , Florida with the USS Vella Gulf (CG-72) , the USS Mitscher (DDG-57) , and the USS Carter Hall (LSD-50) . The submarine then moved to the southern Atlantic until February 2009.
The Pittsburgh was decommissioned on January 17, 2020.
