The USS Carter Hall (LSD-50) is a dock landing ship of the United States Navy and belongs to the Harpers Ferry class . The name is derived from the Carter Hall estate near Millwood , Virginia.

history

LSD-50 was commissioned in 1989 and keeled at Avondale Shipyard in 1991 . In 1993 the ship was launched and was christened. In the fall of 1995 the official commissioning into the US Navy took place.

The first relocation took place in 1997 in the Mediterranean. In 2003, Carter Hall operated on the side of the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) off Liberia , where a civil war was raging. In 2005 the ship went to the Indian Ocean as escort of the USS Nassau (LHA-4) , where the combat group was supposed to guarantee the safety of the sea routes against pirates. The group later sailed the Persian Gulf. In 2007 the ship was sailing off Somalia again. In June, the crew noticed the Danish cargo ship MV Danica White occupied by Somali pirates . The Carter Hall destroyed three skiffs the pirates, but could not stop the kidnapping of the ship in Somali waters, the pirates already on board.

Also in 2008 the ship sailed on the side of the Iwo Jima off Somalia. In early 2010, the Carter Hall with the USS Bataan (LHD-5) and USS Fort McHenry (LSD-43) were used after the earthquake in Haiti to deliver relief supplies to the coasts. With the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) which displaced Carter Hall in August 2010, to enter the of the flood disaster in Pakistan to bring affected areas of relief supplies ashore.
