The USS Oak Hill (LSD-51) is a dock landing ship of the United States Navy and belongs to the Harpers Ferry class . The name is derived from the Oak Hill estate near Leesburg , Virginia.
history
LSD-51 was commissioned in 1991 and laid down at Avondale Shipyard in 1992 . In 1994 the ship was launched and was christened. In June 1996 the official commissioning into the US Navy took place.
In 1997 the first installation of Oak Hill began . During Operation Southern Watch , the ship sailed in the Persian Gulf. During an exercise in 2000 off Morehead City , North Carolina , the Oak Hill ran onto a sandbar and could only be towed free after eight hours. The ship was not damaged.
In 2002, the Oak Hill sailed alongside the USS Wasp (LHD-1) off Afghanistan and in the Gulf as part of Operation Enduring Freedom . In 2005, the Oak Hill was escorting the USS Saipan (LHA-2) in the Caribbean, on the one hand looking for drug smugglers, but also providing humanitarian aid in Haiti . In early 2006, the ship sailed for three months in the Indian Ocean. At the side of the USS Bataan (LHD-5) , the Oak Hill was also there in 2007. The ship spent most of 2008 in the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. In 2009 she took part in the Talisman Saber exercise with Australian forces.
On August 31, 2017, the ship left its home port to support disaster relief after Hurricane Harvey in Texas . However, this aid was not requested, and so Oak Hill was able to provide disaster relief after Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico .
