The USS Miami (SSN-755) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to. It is named after the city of Miami in Florida .
history
The contract for SSN-755 was awarded in 1983. In October 1986 the keel of the Miami was laid at Electric Boat , and after just over two years of construction, the submarine was launched. After the final equipment at the pier and successful test drives, the official commissioning for the US Navy followed in June 1990.
In 1998 the Miami BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missile fired at targets in Iraq and Kosovo. This happened as part of Operation Desert Fox or Operation Allied Force . In the summer of 2006, EB performed an overhaul at a cost of $ 29.3 million. In 2007, a mission followed in the Expeditionary Strike Group around the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) . The next relocation followed in 2009. In 2011, the Miami sailed in European waters and, among other things, docked at the Norwegian base in Haakonsvern .
On March 15, 2012, the Miami docked in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for a 20-month overhaul . On May 23, 2012, a shipyard worker started a fire in the front part of the submarine while it was in dock. The arsonist was sentenced to 17 years in prison. At the time of the fire, there were no weapons on board and the nuclear reactor was not in operation. Five firefighters and two crew members were injured during the extinguishing work. Mainly the control room, combat system room and torpedo room in the bow of the submarine were damaged. Due to the upcoming austerity measures, the US Navy announced on August 7, 2013 that it would discard the planned repair measures and scrap the submarine.
