The USS Asheville (SSN-758) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to. It is named after the city of Asheville , North Carolina .

history

The Asheville was commissioned by Newport News Shipbuilding in 1984 , laid down there in 1987 and launched after a construction period of over three years. Commissioning with the US Navy took place in 1991.

In December 1996, Asheville was selected as the test platform for a new drone . Here, the start of a was Sea Ferret of Northrop Grumman from the submarine simulation, while the drone is actually from a Cessna 206 was transported. Steering commands were successfully transmitted from the submarine to the drone, and command could also be handed over to ground-based teams.

From the end of 2004 to May 2005, the Asheville operated in the Pacific and took part in two exercises. She called at the ports of Guam , Singapore , Saipan and Hawaii . Also in 2007 and 2010 the submarine sailed for six months in the Pacific. In October 2010 the Asheville practiced together with her sister USS Topeka (SSN-754) and the Chilean Thomson , a German class 209 boat . The main focus was on capturing a modern diesel-electric boat and getting to know its characteristics.
