The frigate Zr. Ms. De Zeven Provinciën (F802) is the flagship of the Royal Netherlands Navy and the lead ship of the De Zeven Provinciën class .
Surname
The name De Zeven Provinciën recalls the seven northern provinces of the Netherlands, which founded the Union of Utrecht on January 23, 1579 . This gave rise to the Republic of the Seven United Provinces in 1581 . The frigate F802 is the eighth ship to bear this name.
Ship platform
The De Zeven Provinciën class was developed as part of a trilateral agreement for the development of a joint ship platform between the Federal Republic of Germany , the Netherlands and Spain (" Trilateral Frigate Cooperation ", TFC). In Germany, the class 124 ( Saxony class ) was built under this agreement , in Spain the Álvaro de Bazán class .
history
The ship was laid down on September 1, 1998 at the Koninklijke Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen in the Netherlands . The launch took place on April 8, 2000. The ship was put into service on April 26, 2002 and is the first of four air defense and command frigates (LCF) of the De Zeven Provinciën class. The frigate is stationed in Den Helder .
In March 2006, a fire broke out on board the Hyundai Fortune container ship operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen . The Zr. Ms. De Zeven Provinciën , who was at the time in action in the Horn of Africa as part of Operation Enduring Freedom , was the first ship to reach the freighter in distress and was able to rescue all 27 crew members.
During the same operation, the frigate and the US destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG-80) tried to intercept a South Korean trawler that had been taken over by pirates in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia . After the pirates threatened to kill the crew of the trawler, both ships withdrew.
