history
1970s
Hyundai Merchant Marine was founded in the spring of 1976 as Asia Merchant Marine . The company started out with three tankers . In times of political instability, the first few years were mainly characterized by activities for the parent company Hyundai Group. The first container line service was set up in 1979.
1980s
The company's ascent began in the 1980s. So HMM positioned itself more broadly by expanding its range. The shipping company bought bulk carriers and the first Korean Ro / Ro ship . The container ship routes to North America were also expanded . From August 1982 the group operated under the name Hyundai Merchant Marine. In the course of the expansion, the shipping company repeatedly acquired competitors and thus strengthened its own market position. In 1988 the company merged with Korea Marine Transport Corporation .
1990s
From 1990 the shipping company developed into an international logistics company. From 1991 onwards, HMM established a well-developed network for intermodal traffic in the USA for the transport of containers from the ports to the hinterland. By incorporating various regional shipping companies, Hyundai Merchant Marine also offered liner services within Asia for the first time in the same year. In 1994 the shipping company started transporting liquefied natural gas ( LNG) . In 1996 the first container terminal opened in Kaohsiung , Taiwan, exclusively handling Hyundai Merchant Marine ships. From 1997 the shipping company entered into a large alliance. Together with the then American President Lines (APL) and the Japanese Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), the New World Alliance was formed . In 1998, for the first time, HMM was able to offer routes to all the major ports in the world by sharing the ships of the Alliance.
From 2000
At the beginning of the new millennium, Hyundai Merchant Marine began to modernize and expand the existing fleet. Intermodal traffic has also increased. From 2007, Hyundai Merchant Marine connected the Port of Hamburg with Mława in Poland with a regular freight train for its containers. In 2009 there was also regular train service between Hamburg and Budapest . In 2011, HMM ordered container ships with a higher capacity of more than 10,000 TEU for the first time. In the same year, Hyundai Merchant Marine joined the G6 alliance .
consortium
The New World Alliance of HMM, APL and MOL existed for about 13 years. During this time, the shipping companies cooperated time and again with the roughly equal-sized Grand Alliance consortium made up of the shipping companies Hapag-Lloyd , NYK Line and OOCL . The collaboration has been steadily expanded since 2005, before the alliances fully merged in 2011 and founded the G6 alliance . The shipping companies guarantee each other capacities on their ships and jointly plan the routes of their container liner services.
