history

The Korea Marine Transport Corporation was founded in April 1954, less than a year after the end of the Korean War . The massive destruction of the entire country hit the economy badly and so the development of the company was slow. Only with the help of the shipbuilding program imposed by the military dictatorship did KMTC begin to grow significantly. In 1964, the shipping company acquired the two largest ships under the Korean flag to date, the Dongyang and the Shinyang .

The company also started container shipping in the 1960s. In 1967, KMTC was the first shipping company to operate semi-container ships between South Korea and Japan. The first full container ships between the two countries were again KMTC ships in 1973. In the following years KMTC began to call for more and more Asian ports.

In 1988 the company became part of the Hyundai Merchant Marine Group.

In 1992 the company began to expand into further logistical activities. KMTC opened the first pure container terminal in the port of Ulsan. From 1992 to 1998 the company expanded the existing Asian routes.

In the 2000s, the shipping company pushed the modernization of the fleet. In 2011 KMTC founded the KMTC Ship and Crew Management Company in order to better educate and train its own personnel. In 2012, KMTC opened the 840,000 square meter expansion of the container terminal in the port of Busan.

fleet

Korea Marine Transport Corporation's fleet consists of 24 own container ships, which are divided into two series. In addition, the shipping company maintains the bulk carrier KMTC Challenge with a measurement of 30,374 GT.
