Gion Condrau

Gion Condrau (born January 9, 1919 in Disentis , Switzerland ; † November 21, 2006 in Zurich ) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist .

Life

Condrau graduated 1937 Matura in Disentis. He then completed a medical degree in Bern and received his doctorate in 1944. He attended training courses in psychiatry in Zurich , Lisbon and Providence , USA , in neurology and neurosurgery in Zurich and Paris (La Salpetrière). He was an assistant doctor in internal medicine and rheumatology in Zurich and at the Aviation Medical Institute at the Dübendorf military airfield . Since 1953 he was a specialist in neurology, psychiatry and psychotherapy. At the same time, Condrau studied philosophy , psychology , sociology and curative education at the University of Zurich , graduating with a Dr. phil. hist. He completed special training in psychoanalysis in the USA, in Jungian analysis ( CG Jung ) in Zurich and in Daseinanalysis at the Institute for Medical Psychotherapy. He then worked with Medard Boss until 1990. From 1959 to 1968 he attended Martin Heidegger's seminars in Zollikon .

In 1945, Condrau led auxiliary columns of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and repatriated prisoners from Mauthausen concentration camp . In 1953/54 he was an officer in the International Peace Mission in Korea . He ended his military career as a colonel in the medical field.

In 1953, Condrau opened his own practice for neurology and psychiatry in Zurich. In 1964 he was at the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich habilitation and Historical Philosophy and the same summer semester at the Faculty of the University of Freiburg . There he worked as a titular professorship from 1967 . He received teaching positions at the Faculty of Natural Sciences in Freiburg (Switzerland) and at the Philosophical Faculty in Zurich and at the Institute for Applied Psychology (IAP) in Zurich.

He was psychiatric consultant at the cantonal university women's clinic in Zurich and co-founder and honorary member of the Swiss Society for Psychosomatic Medicine (1963), the Swiss Society for Anthropology of Life Analysis (1970), the Institute for Life Analysis for Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics (1971) and its director until the end of March 2000. 1989 he was president of the International association for Daseinanalysis (IVDA) and during years a member of the Executive Council of the International Federation of Psychoanalytic Societies (IFPS).

For twelve years, Condrau was a member of the Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP) in Swiss politics: in 1966 he was a councilor in Herrliberg , from 1971 to 1975 a Zurich cantonal councilor and from 1975 to 1979 a national councilor .

Gion Condrau was the father of three children, two of whom also became existential analysts. The medical historian Flurin Condrau (* 1965) is his nephew.
