Philipp Gut (2013)

Philipp Gut (born November 21, 1971 in Bangkok ) is a Swiss journalist and book author. Until December 2019 he was Head of Domestic Affairs and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Weltwoche .

Life

education

Gut studied history, modern German literature and philosophy in Zurich and Berlin and was an assistant at the History Department of the University of Zurich for four years . In 2005 Gut received his doctorate in Zurich with Peter von Matt and Jörg Fisch with a thesis entitled Thomas Mann's Idea of a German Culture . "The present book [...] can be regarded as the most stimulating study of the political Thomas Mann since Kurt Sontheimer's groundbreaking work in 1961: Thomas Mann and the Germans," said Hans Rudolf Vaget , professor at Smith College . For his dissertation, which was awarded the title summa cum laude , Gut received the scientific sponsorship award of the German Thomas Mann Society in 2007 .

journalism

Gut began his journalistic career at Zürcher Tages-Anzeiger, first as a freelance writer, then as a culture editor. In 2006 he moved to the domestic department of Weltwoche , where he took over the management of the culture and society department in 2008. Gut has been head of the domestic business since 2009 and deputy editor-in-chief since 2010. He writes on a wide range of topics. His research is widely discussed again and again, and he was convicted in court three times for defamation.

  • In October 2005 Good broke with his in the Tages-Anzeiger published paper "Where Switzerland remains at the university?" There was a lively controversy over what, in his opinion, was neglectful treatment of Swiss history at Swiss universities.
  • In October 2007 Gut published an article on the so-called Roschacher affair in connection with the banker Oskar Holenweger , in which he accused the head of the Federal Prosecutor's office of scheming against the then Swiss Justice Minister Christoph Blocher and fooling the Parliamentary Audit Commission. Gut and the journalist Daniel Ammann were convicted by the Zurich governor's office for violating Article 293 of the Criminal Code (publication of official secret hearings).
  • In March 2008, Gut revealed considerable shortcomings in Swiss aid to the tsunami victims in Thailand with on-site research.
  • Together with a co-author, Gut wrote the Weltwoche cover story in 2012 about the systematic abuse of Roma children by criminal gangs, which was passionately discussed. There was strong criticism of the tendency of the text and, above all, of the pointed statement of the cover picture. Gut defended the report in several radio and television programs (including ZDF, BBC, Swiss television), as well as in a follow-up article in Weltwoche . The children encouraged to steal are primarily victims, not perpetrators.
  • In December 2012 Gut reported that the public prosecutor of the canton of Zug was investigating the city council and CFO Ivo Romer ( FDP. Liberals ). This was accused of having embezzled millions of dollars entrusted to him. Romer subsequently resigned from his government office. In February 2017, the criminal court of the canton of Zug sentenced the guilty politician to four years and six months in prison. This because of embezzlement, disloyal management and forgery of documents.
  • In February and March 2013 Gut published a series of articles in the Weltwoche in which he alleged that the Tages-Anzeiger editor -in- chief, Res Strehle , had had contacts with the militant left-wing extremist scene in the 1980s and 1990s. The Swiss press council reprimanded Weltwoche for reporting on Strehle. The public interest does not entitle Weltwoche to put forward the fact-distorting thesis, which is not substantiated by facts, that Strehle, as a possible accomplice and ideal supporter of political violence, had an "irritating proximity to bombers and left-wing extremists".
  • In April 2014, Gut caused a sensation with a research, according to which the SP education director Regine Aeppli announced the dismissal of the medical historian and SVP national councilor Christoph Mörgeli in the Mörgeli affair . Gut's account was confirmed two months later by a non-partisan investigative commission of the Zurich cantonal parliament. Regine Aeppli denies the cause, there is testimony against testimony. Gut's research was also confirmed by the Zurich Administrative Court in December 2015. The university had made various serious errors and Mörgeli was wrongly dismissed, the court found. In contrast to Gut, the court saw no political reasons for the dismissal.
  • In 2014, Philipp Gut accused the historian Philipp Sarasin of concealing his love affair with the candidate Svenja Goltermann as a member of the appointment committee for the successor to a professor . Goltermann was placed first on the list and finally appointed to the position. Sarasin denied any bias, his love affair with Goltermann had only existed since summer 2013, the appeal process ran from 2009 to 2010. A commission of experts came to the conclusion that there was no evidence of the accuracy of these allegations. Sarasin and Goltermann filed a criminal complaint against Philipp Gut for defamation and a civil lawsuit against Weltwoche and against Philipp Gut for personal injury. The District Court of Zurich saw Guts articles in this matter as the offense of multiple defamation and unfair competition and sentenced him to a conditional fine of 180 daily rates of 130 francs each and a payable fine of 5000 francs. The judgment is final. Gut was also sentenced to a payment of CHF 10,000 in civil proceedings for untruthful violation of personal rights.
  • In June 2015 Gut revealed that the National Council candidate, financial politician and former President of the Cantonal Council Paul Schlegel (FDP) had received several dozen debt enforcements (= foreclosures) with his companies in the canton of St. Gallen . Schlegel then resigned from his political functions.

In addition to his work for Weltwoche , Gut writes a regular column for Ladies Drive , a Swiss business magazine for women.
