Hans Rudolf Vaget
Hans Rudolf Vaget (born February 2, 1938 in Marienbad , Czechoslovakia ) is a German specialist in German.
Life
Hans Rudolf Vaget was born in the Sudetenland . He studied in Munich and Tübingen, at the University of Wales in Cardiff and at Columbia University in New York. From 1967 to 2004 he was Professor of German Studies and Comparative Literature at Smith College (Northampton, Massachusetts). He was visiting professor at the University of California, Irvine , Yale , Columbia, Princeton , the University of Massachusetts Amherst , Middlebury College and the University of Hamburg . Vaget was also a co-founder of the Goethe Society of North America and at times its president.
The focus of his research are Goethe, Wagner and Thomas Mann, about whom he has published numerous publications. He is one of the editors of the Thomas Mann edition and one of the editors of the wagnerspektrum magazine, which was founded in 2005 .
In 1994 Vaget received the Thomas Mann Medal in Lübeck , and Inge Jens gave the laudation . He was a fellow of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 2011 and of the American Academy in Berlin in 2012 .
Vaget is one of the three “companions of many decades” to whom Dieter Borchmeyer wrote his book Was ist Deutsch? A nation's search for itself “in gratitude and friendship” dedicated.
