Regine Aeppli

Regine Aeppli Wartmann (born October 5, 1952 in Winterthur ; resident in Zurich ) is a Swiss politician of the Social Democratic Party (SP). From 2003 to 2015 she was a member of the government of the Canton of Zurich and head of the education department.

education and profession

Regine Aeppli grew up in Uerikon near Stäfa , and has lived in Zurich since 1972. She studied law at the University of Zurich , obtained a licentiate and was admitted to the bar in 1982. From 1986 to 2003 she worked as a freelance lawyer in a group practice in Zurich. She also served in the legal advice law collective.

Political career

From 1987 to 1996 Regine Aeppli was a member of the Zurich Cantonal Council for the SP . From 1995 to 2003 she was deputy to the cantonal ombudsman . In the Swiss parliamentary elections in 1995 she was elected to the National Council, where she was a member of the Legal Affairs Commission and the State Political Commission. She was also a member of the SP parliamentary committee. In 1997 she became President of the Swiss Workers' Relief Organization . She gave up both offices when she was elected to the Government Council of the Canton of Zurich in 2003 . There she took over the education direction from Ernst Buschor . She continued his school reform policy. On June 5, 2005, a good 70 percent of the Zurich electorate approved the new elementary school law. The innovations - introduction of the managed schools, educational focus, block times, cantonalization of the kindergarten as well as the obligation for municipalities to clarify the need for school-based or extra-family care and to create appropriate offers - were implemented by the end of 2011. In addition, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences was restructured during her tenure .

Aeppli was President of the Government Council in 2009/2010 and 2014/2015. Aeppli announced in May 2014 that she would no longer run in the 2015 elections.

Regine Aeppli is widowed and has two children.

Volunteering

On June 17, 2017, Regine Aeppli was elected President of the Swiss Samaritan Association.
