Baboua in Nana-Mambéré prefecture

Baboua is a provincial city and an administrative district ( sub-prefecture ) in the Central African Republic (CAR), about 550 km northwest of Bangui on the border with Cameroon . Districts are u. a. Tongo, Sango, Jolie-Soir, Center. The original population was Gbaya- speaking, but Baboua is located on a main road and the seat of a Sous-Préfecture , so that traders and business people, officials and politicians from other parts of the country settled down early. This is made easier by the national lingua franca, Sango .

population

The population living here, like the entire country, suffers from the recurring clashes between rebel groups and government militias. There are hardly any earning opportunities, you live from your own field cultivation ( subsistence farming ).

Facilities

There is a primary school (École Primaire de Baboua) and a state hospital with a department for obstetrics, pediatrics and surgery. The hospital also has a pharmacy and a simply equipped laboratory.

Further facilities are a theological seminar center and the Evangelical Lutheran Bible School , which has existed since 1949 . Regional Church (Église Évangélique Luthérienne de la République Centrafricaine), in which pastors and catechists are trained for nationwide community development. The Bible school also has a housing estate and a kindergarten.

Hospital and Bible school are run by the Ev.-luth. Missionswerk in Hermannsburg supported.

Religions

No reliable information is currently available. The proportion of the Christian population is likely to be around 50% (25% Protestants, 25% Catholics). Approx. 35% of the population follow the traditional African religion and about 15% follow Islam. In Baboua there are both Catholic and Protestant congregations and institutions (e.g. kindergartens) as well as Muslim communities. The practice of religion was considerably stigmatized in the critical tensions after 2013, when Muslim Séléka troops and anti- balaka mercenaries tried to carry out ethnic cleansing.

In cooperation with the regional health centers, the hospital strives to ensure basic medical care for around 100,000 people. In addition to the inadequate equipment, the permanent lack of specialist staff causes problems. There is hardly any government support. The hospital pharmacy has been supported by the Catholic Church for years. Salaries for employees, as for teachers and other servants, are only paid out irregularly. The already tense supply situation is exacerbated by the sporadic arrival of refugee groups from the surrounding crisis areas ( Chad , Sudan , Congo ), as well as internal displacement.

Deforestation to obtain cropland and firewood led to a drop in the water table in the 1980s and 1990s. A reforestation project started several years ago brought some improvements.

A solar-powered well project has ensured the hospital's daily water needs since 1998.

The Evangelical Lutheran Missionswerk Hermannsburg was since 1981 with staff assignments as part of the partnership with the Eglise Evangelique Lutherienne de la RCA on development projects for theological training, medical infrastructure, etc. active in Baboua. The Church also has other partnerships with the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America), the Danish Mission Africa and the Alsatian Evangelical Lutheran Church.
