The Aviation Medical Institute (FAI) in Dübendorf is the Swiss competence center for medical and psychological assessments of men and women in the fields of military and civil aviation.

history

The FAI was first mentioned as an institute in 1922 and even then it was commissioned to check the fitness and health of candidates for the pilot profession in the Swiss Air Force, founded in 1914 . On October 23, 2013, the flight doctor of the FAI, Volker Lang († 54), lost his life when the F / A-18 D J-5237, in which he was a passenger / observer, flew into the Lopper in Alpnach OW. The F / A-18 pilot Stefan Jäger of Fliegerstaffel 11 was also killed.

The FAI comprises the Aviation Medicine, Aviation Psychology and Staff Director FAI sections. Around 35 specialists such as aviation doctors, flight psychologists, aero-medical specialists, sports scientists, physiotherapists, technical support and secretarial services work at the FAI. As an institution relevant to the mission, the FAI is part of the Air Force. As an aeromedical center, it works according to the guidelines of the EASA and the FAA and is civilly accredited.

The main military tasks are to carry out aptitude tests for members of the military air service and other military specialists in the air force and the military division of Skyguide . In addition, there are regular health checks, the development of nutrition plans and ensuring vaccinations; in addition, research and training in the areas of aviation psychology and aviation medicine. As a civil aeromedical center on behalf of the Federal Office for Civil Aviation , the FAI carries out assessments of the suitability of commercial pilots (Class 1) in accordance with internationally valid standards (EASA, FAA). The FAI works nationally and internationally with military and civil partners. The users of the FAI include military pilots, parachute scouts, on-board operators, on-board photographers, loadmasters, etc., employees of the air surveillance of the civil and military Skyguide , candidates for general staff training, members of special units as well as civil pilots, line pilots and members of the Federal Council .

The FAI has a test room for the SPHAIR program, equipment in the areas of medical devices, laboratory, X-ray, performance test, hearing and eye tests, training ( gym ) and instruction. The FAI has the only vacuum chamber in Switzerland. This is used for training flight personnel in hypobaric hypoxia and for research. Devices and materials are also tested there for use in aviation.

The FAI conducts research into human performance in aviation, test development, and hypoxia. The FAI appears at national and international specialist events and makes its findings available to the public.

Vocational training

The FAI offers apprenticeships and internships: commercial employees , medical practice assistants and psychological interns. In terms of medical training, the FAI is recognized as a training center for occupational medicine, general internal medicine and for the basic course for aeromedical examiners according to the requirements of the EASA. The FAI is part of the Flight Safety Board, the command and command report of the Air Force and the crisis and care organization of the Swiss Armed Forces . The FAI takes part in the army's humanitarian operations for the benefit of the EDA .
