William McRaven (2012)

William Harry "Bill" McRaven (born November 6, 1955 in Pinehurst , North Carolina ) is a former admiral in the United States Navy . He was Commander in Chief of the United States Special Operations Command from August 8, 2011 to August 28, 2014 . He previously served as the commander of the United States Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) from June 2008 to 2011 .

Participation in special operations

McRaven had authority at all levels of Special Operations, including his duties as commanding general in operations of the JSOC, as Commodore of Naval Special Warfare Group 1 , Commander of SEAL Team 3, responsible working group leader in the CENTCOM area, task unit commander during the Second Gulf War , leader of a squadron with the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group and SEAL Platoon Commander with Underwater Demolition Team 21 / SEAL Team 4.

On April 6, 2011, McRaven was proposed by President Barack Obama for appointment as admiral and ninth in command of the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). This was confirmed in June 2011.

On August 28, 2014, McRaven handed control of the USSOCOM to General Joseph L. Votel ( USAR ) and retired.

From January 2015 to May 2018 he was Chancellor of the University of Texas System .

At the Council on Foreign Relations in 2019, he warned that China's technological advances (also thanks to theft of intellectual property ) threaten US national security and that the US must invest significantly more in R&D.

Operation Neptune's Spear: Death of Osama bin Laden

McRaven appears to be in charge of organizing and conducting Operation Neptune's Spear, the operation that led to the death of Osama bin Laden . CIA Director Leon Panetta delegated the task to McRaven, who since 2001 had participated almost exclusively in operations and strategies in the fight against terrorism . The New York Times wrote:

"In February, Mr. Panetta called Vice Adm. William H. McRaven, commander of the Pentagon's Joint Special Operations Command, to CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., To give him details about the compound and to begin planning a military strike. Admiral McRaven, a veteran of the covert world who had written a book on American Special Operations, spent weeks working with the CIA on the operation, and came up with three options: a helicopter assault using American Navy SEAL commandos, a strike with B- 2 bombers that would obliterate the compound, or a joint raid with Pakistani intelligence operatives who would be told about the mission hours before the launch. "
“In February [then CIA chief] Panetta asked Vice Admiral William H. McRaven, the commander of the Pentagon's Joint Special Operations Command, to meet at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, to give him more detailed information on the local situation to start planning a military strike. Admiral McRaven, a seasoned covert operations man who had written a book on American special operations, worked with the CIA for weeks. There were three options: a helicopter attack with a command of the Navy SEALs , an attack with B-2 bombers that would completely destroy the target area, or a joint attack with Pakistani intelligence units, which would not be informed until hours before the start of the operation . "

On the day before the action it was said: “Mr. Obama took a break from rehearsing for the White House Correspondents Dinner that night to call Admiral McRaven, to wish him luck. "[" President Obama interrupted preparations for the White House Correspondents Dinner to call Admiral McRaven and say goodbye to him to wish the operation. "]

Others

McRaven has publicly criticized US President Trump several times after his retirement . Among other things, he called Trump's repeated attacks on the media "the greatest threat to our democracy". Anyone who, like Trump, questions the right to freedom of expression is undermining an important pillar of the constitution.

After giving a high profile talk on the subject at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas in 2014, McRaven published a book in 2017 called Make Your Bed. Little Things That Can Change Your Life ... And Maybe the World . (German translation: Make your bed. The 10 most important things I learned as a Navy SEAL and which will also change your life ).
