Hull Identification Number

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hull number (short: HIN ) is a (Engl. The hull Hull ) mounted ship number of pleasure boats .

The HIN is used to uniquely identify a boat, similar to a chassis number for motor vehicles. The legal basis for the number introduced in the United States in 1972 for boats built or imported before November 1, 1972 is the Federal Boating Act . This number must be on the top right of the stern. The number consists of twelve or fourteen characters, depending on whether the boat is bought or used in the European Union . Two different formats are used for this:

  • ABC12345K899 ( USCG format mandatory for North America since 1984)
  • US-ABC12345K899 ( ISO format prescribed since 1998 for the EU area for sport boats up to 25 m in length). It differs from the US format only in the prefixed country code of the country of origin. The legal basis for Europe is Directive 94/25 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of June 16, 1994 on the harmonization of the legal and administrative provisions of the member states on recreational craft, which in Germany was established with the Tenth Ordinance on the Product Safety Act (Ordinance on Recreational Boats and Personal Watercraft ) (10th ProdSV) has been implemented.

Since 1998, boats built in the United States and destined for export to Europe must have the ISO format number (EN ISO10087) attached.

A comparable Hull Serial Number (HIN) is required in Canada .
