Oliver Hirschbiegel (born December 29, 1957 in Hamburg ) is a German director . His most commercially successful works include a. The Experiment (2001) and The Downfall (2004).

Career

After attending a Waldorf school , Hirschbiegel decided to go to sea as a kitchen boy. Soon, however, he began studying at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and studied painting and graphics. He later switched to film as a subject.

Hirschbiegel celebrated his first successes as a performance artist with the group M. Raskin Stichting Ens. , together with Andreas Coerper , Rotraut Pape and Eschi Fiege. He was also significantly involved in the development of the video magazine Infermental .

Hirschbiegel came to film through his friend, the screenwriter Michael Arnal , who placed him as the production manager for the third season of the Losberg television series . Here Hirschbiegel has a comical appearance as the Italian gangster Inglese on the side of Ida di Benedetto and Sky du Mont . His first script , Das Go! Project , Hirschbiegel was able to sell to ZDF in 1986 . He then directed it here. Various television projects followed in the next few years. The thriller Murderous Decision , broadcast in 1991, is remarkable here , which shows the same story from the point of view of two people in the form of two films, whereby the viewer himself could determine the perspective: Both versions were broadcast in parallel on ARD and ZDF, a process unique on German television . Hirschbiegel's next film, Invasion, was the fourth film adaptation of the novel The Body Eaters are coming . The cinema release in Germany was October 18, 2007. The Wachowski brothers and James McTeigue worked on the revision of the film without being named in the credits . Hirschbiegel 's feature film Five Minutes of Heaven , produced in Great Britain and Ireland , opened in German cinemas on June 17, 2010 and was only seen by around 4,000 viewers, although it was largely positively received in the US press. 2011 seemed Hirschbiegel on the co-produced by ZDF television series Borgia with, a 25 million US dollars expensive production about the family Borgia with an international cast. Hirschbiegel is married and has two daughters. He has lived in London and Hamburg since 2012. His brother Thomas is the chief reporter for the Hamburger Morgenpost , his brother Urs works as an assistant director and producer.
