Rotraut Pape (born April 10, 1956 in Berlin ; † April 14, 2019 there ) was a German filmmaker , artist and university professor .

Life

Rotraut Pape studied fine arts and experimental film at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts . Early on she concentrated on the media of film, video and computer, but was less interested in their technological possibilities - although she mastered them with virtuosity - but in their artistic potential to develop formulations for social, i.e. political and ethical issues. Performance and installation played a big role in her work; likewise in their videos and films. This took place both as an actual performance and as an interactive test arrangement. She dealt with digital archives and artistic broadcast formats, with the relationship between analogue and digital, virtual and real, etc. In the 1980s she lived and worked with her husband Gerard Couty within the artist collective Frigo in Lyon, where she realized projects such as Radio Bellevue , in the early 1990s with Van Gogh TV art television projects. As a professor, she initiated and accompanied many successful projects at the HfG Offenbach, such as the fulldome project. Parallel to her artistic work, she realized various experimental documentaries for arte , 3sat and ZDF .

In the 2001/2002 winter semester, Rotraut Pape was appointed to the newly established chair of the Heinz and Gisela Friederichs Foundation at the Offenbach am Main University of Design (HfG for short) . The focus of the courses was on the transience of storage media. Then Pape taught at the HfG as a visiting professor and from 2004 as a professor for film and video. In 2011 she became Vice Dean of the Visual Communication Department . Pape died in April 2019 at the age of 63 after a serious illness in Berlin.
