The Museum Platform NRW (spelling: "museums plattform nrw") is a public platform for modern art in the museums of North Rhine-Westphalia, freely accessible to all users of the World Wide Web .

history

The NRW Museum Platform was initiated in 2006 by the NRW KULTURsekretariat and implemented in cooperation with the art museums in NRW as well as in cooperation with art historians, curators, developers and designers. A pilot version, in which six museums initially took part, was put online in December 2007. It is based on a technically structured and centrally managed inventory system, the content of which is managed by museums and the platform editorial team. The inclusion of further museums and works from the partner cities of the NRW KULTURsekretariat followed from 2007. To date, selected collections from 18 museums in NRW have been included. There are currently 516 works by 334 artists on the platform (as of June 2011). In 2013 the platform received the Grimme Online Award in the culture and entertainment category .

Goal setting

The virtual museum of modernism offers an overview of the museum holdings of modernism in NRW. It serves as a public information offer as well as an education and service platform. The museum platform is aimed both at those who are generally interested in art and at the specialist public. It brings together selected modern museum holdings in a centrally accessible virtual museum. Historically grown collection focuses of the individual museums and museum locations should nonetheless remain recognizable and document the collection history of the museums and cultural history in the region.

In addition to detailed specialist texts on the works of art on display, material on artists, museum history and city history can also be collected in this "network museum". All materials (texts and images) can be transferred to individual "collections" by the user. It is possible to manage and download these for personal preparation for a museum visit.

Contents of the museum platform

The museum platform is dedicated to those works of art of the modern age that are a permanent part of the regional collections and that can be viewed in the museums in North Rhine-Westphalia. Each work on display is accompanied by detailed technical articles that can be traced back to the curators of the participating museums or specialized art scholars. In addition, detailed biographies and historical outlines provide more detailed information on artists, the museum and cultural history of the museum cities.

The collections cover almost all areas of modern to contemporary art. They include works that are assigned to Impressionism or Art Nouveau, Expressionism and Constructivism , Surrealism and New Objectivity . The collections follow the artistic phenomena of the second half of the 20th century, include objects and installations, action art and environments, action painting , Informel , Pop Art , Concept Art , the postmodern currents of new figuration or land and body art, video and net art .

The museum platform works with an open concept that includes “guided tours” through modernism as well as the free and targeted search for artists, works, museums and museum cities that are already connected to the project. The path leads from the museum platform directly to the collections of the physical museums, for which detailed information is provided about routes, location, accessibility, opening times and history. In the virtual museum of the platform, new constellations of works by artist, location or topic can be called up, which bring the works into new overarching orders regardless of the original museum collection context.

Participating museums

The NRW museum platform is being further developed in cooperation with the participating modern museums in North Rhine-Westphalia. The circle of museums is constantly being expanded, as is the selection of works in the platform's virtual museum.
