The situation art (for Max Imdahl) is an art museum in the park of Haus Weitmar in Bochum 's Weitmar district with a permanent exhibition of important works of contemporary art. The building ensemble is designed in such a way that art, architecture and nature relate to one another in a dialogical manner.

The project was started in 1988–1990 on the initiative of Alexander von Berswordt-Wallrabe in memory of the founding professor of the Art History Institute of the Ruhr University Bochum , Prof. Dr. Max Imdahl (1925–1988). Paintings, drawings and sculptural objects by Gotthard Graubner , Norbert Kricke , Arnulf Rainer and Jan Schoonhoven can be viewed in building pavilions specially designed for the works of art - designed by the architect Peter Forth . The environments by Richard Serra , Maria Nordman and David Rabinowitch are a particular focus of the facility .

Situation Kunst (for Max Imdahl) was incorporated into the art collections of the Ruhr University Bochum in 1991 . In September 2006, the exhibition space of Situation Kunst was almost doubled with the construction of a new building (structural implementation: SOAN Architects from Bochum). The new collection complex conceived by Alexander and Silke von Berswordt-Wallrabe includes a light-space installation by Gianni Colombo , two neon sculptures by Dan Flavin , painterly and sculptural works by Lee Ufan , a neon space installation by François Morellet , works by Dirk Reinartz , Robert Ryman , Ad Reinhardt and other works by Arnulf Rainer, Jan J. Schoonhoven and Richard Serra.

In addition, the collection of contemporary art was expanded to include non-European objects from past eras. Bronze, stone and clay sculptures by Nok, Sokoto, Esie, Benin , Ife and Tada are presented in a separate room . This part of the collection is under the patronage of the former Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Federal Republic of Germany.

Another room houses a collection of sculptures, ceramics and thangkas from Asia. The spectrum ranges from Neolithic ceramics and jade work from China to Buddhist and Hindu sculptures from the Khmer , Buddha statues from Thailand , China and India to Japanese wooden sculptures and Tibetan scroll paintings ( thangkas ).

Situation Kunst also preserves the archive of Max Imdahl's entire academic estate as well as an extensive video archive with feature films on contemporary art.

In May 2010, another exhibition and event building was completed in the middle of the ruins of the Weitmar House, which was destroyed in World War II: the so-called cube. The cube was a project as part of the RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture and was built according to the plans of the architects Pfeiffer, Ellermann and Preckel from Münster. Since then, changing exhibitions as well as scientific and cultural events have taken place in the cube. The international and interdisciplinary program is mainly designed by the Situation Kunst Foundation in cooperation with various institutes at the Ruhr University in Bochum.

Entrance to the underground museum

For the 50th birthday of the Ruhr University Bochum, the MuT - Museum underground was realized in 2015. The MuT was built underground to protect the landscape and fulfills two essential functions: A third of the exhibition space is to be used for pioneering temporary exhibitions that are already in the art and a. Developed in collaboration with various RUB institutes and usually sent on tour from here to other museums throughout Germany and Europe. Two thirds of the exhibition rooms are intended to permanently present the largest part of the group of world views. This includes around 350 mainly important works of landscape art since the 15th century, from classic oil paintings to room-filling video-sound installations. In a series of exhibitions starting in Bochum, this bundle has already been shown in several German and international museums (including Kiel, Wiesbaden, Chemnitz, Cottbus, Maastricht).
