The Moritz Fiege GmbH & Co. KG private brewery is a family brewery founded in Bochum in 1878 .

history

Johann Fiege

The origins of the history of the Moritz Fiege private brewery go back to the year 1736. At that time, the innkeeper Moritz Fiege ran a liquor and brandy distillery on Beckstrasse in Bochum. In 1876 Moritz Fiege received the brewing rights from the city of Bochum. He handed this over to his son Johann, who started brewing in 1878 at the current location on Moritz-Fiege-Straße (formerly: Scharnhorststraße) in Bochum, thus laying the foundation for today's company.

The outbreak of World War I in 1914 also meant a setback for the brewery in terms of business. After returning from the war, Moritz Fiege, the second generation owner, set about building the old brewery. In 1926 Moritz Fiege, with the help of his master brewer, brewed a beer specialty that was completely new for the conditions in the Ruhr area at the time: the Moritz Fiege Pils. The constantly growing family business achieved its breakthrough with beer according to the Pilsener brewing style .

Ernst Fiege joined the company in 1947 and established the brewery as a major market company after he and his father Moritz Fiege had rebuilt it after the Second World War.

In 1978 the private brewery celebrated its 100th anniversary. On this occasion, the Fiege family donated the "Ecumenical Center for the Elderly Kaiseraue" in Bochum. For the 125th anniversary on February 19, 2003, the family called the "Villa Marckhoff Initiative" into being, which enabled the renovation of the architecturally valuable old building of the Bochum Art Museum .

Jürgen and Hugo Fiege have been running the family business in the fifth generation since 1981. Since 2003 the private brewery has been bottling its beer almost exclusively in swing top bottles.

In 2006, the Moritz Fiege brewery joined the Die Freie Brauer initiative , in which 40 medium-sized, owner-managed breweries from Germany, Austria and Luxembourg are dedicated to cultivating the art of brewing. The private brewery has been committed to complying with the quality standards of the Slow Brewing seal of approval since 2013 .

In 2015 the company received the "Meister.Werk.NRW" award for its training and qualification achievements. In 2019, Carla and Hubertus Fiege, the sixth generation of the Fiege family, joined the company.
