Dame Carol Ann Duffy (born December 23, 1955 in Glasgow , Scotland , United Kingdom ) is a Scottish poet and playwright . She holds a professorship in contemporary poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University and was named Poet Laureate on May 1, 2009 . She is the first woman, the first Scottish woman and the first openly gay personality to take this position.

Life

She has been the Poet Laureate since May 1, 2009 , the British court poet appointed by the Queen. She is the first woman and the first Scot in this role. She is an openly lesbian and has a daughter.

Duffy lives in Manchester and is Professor of Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University . At the time of her appointment, "Die Ventriloquist Doll" was available in German in a translation by Margitt Lehbert in the St. Pöltner Residenz-Verlag ; the Munich Kunstmann-Verlag has meanwhile also published a volume of poetry translated into German.

For the 2012 Paralympics in London, Carol Ann Duffy has officially written a long poem for public lecture. " Eton Manor " describes the hundred-year history of the building complex selected for the sports competitions in wheelchair tennis and swimming.

Awards

The author was proposed as Poet Laureate in 1999. The title went to Andrew Motion , who limited his term of office to ten years. She won the National Poetry Competition in 1983 , the Somerset Maugham Award in 1988, and was awarded the Whitbread Award and Forward Poetry Prize in 1993, and the TS Eliot Prize in 2005 . She also won the Scottish Arts Council Book Award several times . In 2014 she was ennobled as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
