history

The name Eton Manor is derived from Eton College , which operated from the 1880s sports promotion projects to raise the standard of living in East London. In 1909 four former Eton students founded the Eton Manor Boys' Club to provide sports fields. In 1913 they acquired the former Manor Farm in Hackney . In 1920 a former garbage dump in Leyton was acquired in order to be able to build further sports fields there. Known as The Wilderness, the sports center had facilities for soccer, rugby, cricket, tennis, table tennis, squash, badminton, bowling, boxing, and athletics. In 1967 the club ceased its activities and the sports center remained largely unused from 2001 until it came into the focus of the organizers of the Olympic Games.
