Michelle Fairley (born January 17, 1964 in Coleraine , Northern Ireland ) is a British actress .

life and career

Michelle Fairley was born in Coleraine to Brian and Theresa Fairley and grew up in Ballycastle , County Antrim .

Fairley played in numerous British television series such as The Bill , Holby City and Heartbeat . She had one of her first roles as the murderess Cathy Michaels in the British crime film Inspector Morse . In 2008 she received an Olivier Award nomination for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Emilia in the play Othello . In 2010, she played the mother of Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 in the opening scene . From 2011 to 2013 she was in the US television series Game of Thrones in the role of Catelyn Stark and in 2014 in the ninth season of the hit series 24 , 24: Live Another Day . Here she replaced Judy Davis , originally intended for the role of terrorist Margot Al-Harazi , who had canceled for private reasons.

Fairley has lived in London for several years .
