Fortitude is a British crime series with elements of mystery that aired from 2015 to 2018. It was shot in Reyðarfjörður in Iceland and in England .

action

The action takes place on the Spitzbergen archipelago in the arctic region of Norway , in the fictional 800-inhabitant settlement Fortitude.

season 1

After the attack of a polar bear on the geologist Billy Pettigrew, who is chained to a transmission mast, he lies seriously injured in the snow and is eaten alive. The renowned animal photographer Henry Tyson, who is seriously ill with cancer, observes the scene and allegedly inadvertently gives Pettigrew the coup de grace . A few months later, the playing children Liam Sutter and Carrie Morgan discover a mammoth skeleton on the receding glacier , in which Fortitudes Governor Hildur Odegard wants to build an ice hotel to promote tourism and make Fortitude less dependent on mining . A short time later, the scientist and environmentalist Charlie Stoddard is brutally murdered. The governor sees her plans to open the town to tourism in jeopardy as a result of these events. The investigator Eugene Morton, flown in from London, is supposed to support the local police chief Dan Andersen in the investigation to solve the murder. When more mysterious events occur, Morton realizes that there is more to it than the murder of Stoddard. Many traces, especially photos of Henry Tyson, lead him to the unusual death of the geologist Pettigrew, who was chained to the radio mast in revenge for an attempted rape of Andersen and thus helplessly at the mercy of the starved polar bears. The mysterious events condense on parasitic, prehistoric ichneumon wasps that have been transmitted from the mammoth's body to human hosts and cause psychotic behavior in them.

season 2

With the demolition of the mammoth cemetery, the danger is eliminated. Governor Hildur Odegard is concerned with a man's body decapitated with an exact cut, the disappearance of police chief Dan Andersen and the total control by the government in Oslo. At least she can stop her husband Eric from looking for Andersen until he suddenly appears out of nowhere. He has acute alcohol poisoning and is being treated as an emergency patient. Odegard meets at the "Fortitude Arctic Research Center" with the new member Dr. Khatri, a virus expert who makes remote Fortitude the ideal research environment. Odegard is deposed as governor for flimsy reasons. Meanwhile, her husband Eric is pursuing clues to a geologist who could be the decapitated victim and who was previously in the Congo. Suddenly a polar bear penetrates into the school - a completely atypical behavior, just like the reindeer later, which seems to eviscerate a dead polar bear. Dan Andersen gets up from his hospital bed as if nothing had happened and visits his swarm Elena Ledesma at the research center, who is the only one who has survived the parasitic ichneumon wasps and is now supported by Dr. Khatri is examined. In the middle of the night another decapitated victim, this time female, is found, the saleswoman Bianca. Reindeer juice parties organized by a shaman could provide an explanation for the connection between the two decapitated victims: the animals are given poisonous mushrooms, their livers separate the intoxicant from the toxins and the juice is consumed. In the opinion of Eric Odegard, Dan Andersen's successor, a dangerous psychopath is behind the murders. At the funeral for Bianca, a hooded stranger, Vladek, appears, who is identified as the alleged perpetrator and who was shot while escaping, but cannot be arrested. In the shed into which he had fled, Eric Odegard finds a travel bag with Bianca's head. The acting governor Erling Munk seems to have commissioned the offense against Bianca. Hildur Odegard receives unusual mail from Vukobejina, the Russian border village with Norway. It contains documents and a film from 1942 that reported a plague of parasitic wasps in an unusually warm summer. The only survivor is said to have killed 16 people at the time and had incredible tissue regeneration. Dan Andersen turns off life support for Elena Ledesma, who suddenly and completely unexpectedly turned off Dr. Overpower Khatri and flee with Andersen. Vladek takes revenge on Bianca's killer, and Eric Odegard is late. Vladek confesses the geologist's murder to his confidante, Freya Lennox. When Hildur Odegard confronts Erling Munk with his machinations at a dangerous street opening, Odegard falls into the hole, is still held by Munk but finally let go. He hides Odegard's car. The following actions around Freya, Vladek, Elena, Dan and "Diavol" indicate shamanism. Hildur Odegard is finally discovered in the icy water and rescued dead by Andersen, who may have developed astonishing resilience and regenerative capacity from the parasite. This goes hand in hand with uncontrolled behavior. Munk of course likes the police's first thought of suicide, but cannot prevent Andersen from returning to duty. He quickly realizes that Vladek is playing a role, but he has to let himself be kidnapped from the research center into its cave. Vladek blames Andersen for the current and past, demonic events. He gives him and himself reindeer juice and explains his peculiar motivation for killing the geologist. Freya Lennox notices this, sets a fire and is taken to the hospital by Vladek. Meanwhile, Michael Lennox and daughter Ingrid, the policewoman, have discovered Vladek's underworld while searching for Freya Lennox and are able to free the nailed-down Dan Andersen. Not only that: they finally find Odegard's hidden car. Andersen judges Vladek and is able to stir up the Fortitudes pub-goers by claiming that Munk pushed Hildur Odegard into the street hole. The mob takes revenge on Erling Munk. In the final scene, police officer Petra greets her boss Dan Andersen in the governor's chair: "You're back."
