Samuel Barnett (born April 25, 1980 in Whitby in North Yorkshire , England) is an English actor.

Career

He has appeared on stage, in film, television, and radio, and was best known for The History Boys - Learning For Life by Alan Bennett . In 2009 he played John Everett Millais in the BBC series Desperate Romantics and Joseph Severn in the film Bright Star . His other television appearances include roles in the BBC comedy Twenty Twelve and the Showtime drama Penny Dreadful . From 2016 to 2017 he played the leading role of Dirk Gently in the BBC America adaptation of the book series Dirk Gently's holistic detective agency .

His theater roles were from April 20th to July 4th 2010 at the National Theater London Women Beware Women directed by Thomas Middleton . As of July 2012, he was the all-male cast of Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare's Richard III . At the Globe Theater in London, Barnett played alongside Mark Rylance in Twelfth Night . This production was relocated to the Apollo Theater in the West End on November 2, 2012 and ran there for a limited time. Both Twelfth Night and Richard III . went to Broadway in 2013 and ran there until February 2014 at the Belasco Theater . In the Broadway productions, Barnett played his role as Elizabeth Woodville in Richard III.

Awards and nominations

Barnett was nominated for the Evening Standard Award for Most Upcoming Newcomer for his role in The Marriage of Figaro in 2002 . He was named Best Newcomer & Best Supporting Actor in One Play at the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers Choice Awards for his work on the original production of The History Boys. He was nominated for the 29th annual Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role. He won a 2006 Drama Desk Award and was nominated for a 2006 Tony Award for his work on the Broadway production.

In 2006 Barnett was nominated for the British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer (On Screen) for his work on the film version of The History Boys .

In 2014, Barnett received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor on Twelfth Night .

Barnett is in a relationship with Adam Penford.
