Desperate Romantics is a six-part British television series on the BBC . It is set in industrial London in the 19th century and is about the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . The first broadcast took place from July 21st to August 25th 2009 on the television channel BBC Two .

action

Fred Walters introduces the perfect model to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood ( Dante Gabriel Rossetti , John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt ). He found this in the young and beautiful Lizzie Siddal . Rossetti immediately takes a liking to the beautiful girl. He hopes through them to create a work of art that will make him really famous. But Fred Walters also fell in love with Lizzie. However, she only raves about Rossettie and the two begin a love affair. Lizzie quickly learns to paint herself and soon receives more attention from the art critic John Ruskin than Rossetti, which makes him jealous. Again and again the brotherhood tries to get the attention of Ruskin in order to become even better known with his support.

background

The television series was inspired by the book Desperate Romantics: The Private Lives Of The Pre-Raphaelites by Franny Moyle . This also worked as an executive producer on the television series. BBC Two won the award-winning Peter Bowker as screenwriter . With regard to the historical accuracy of the television series, the producers have given themselves some leeway. For example, the character of the narrator Fred Walters was reinvented. While the ratings were still relatively good when the first episode was broadcast, at 2.61 million TV viewers, interest continued to decline from episode to episode. The last episode only wanted to see 1.76 million viewers.
